Information Over Fear

Imagine this: you’re going about your day when you receive a text message alerting you to a Toll Road fee, a delinquent tax bill, or someone claiming to be from the government cautioning you that a warrant will be issued for your arrest. Or it could be a friendly message; a simple “hello” or “I miss you.” Your heart races, and you quickly click the link, and you reply. Most likely, it is the Toll Road Scam, the Imposter Scam, or the Romance Scam.

These are a few of the scams going around now but never fear, here are a few simple tips to help you stay safe:

  • Don’t click suspicious links. Whether it’s a text, email, or social media message, even from someone you know. Always double-check, and if you’re unsure, do an internet search and visit the organization’s homepage.
  • Verify everything. If someone says they’re from the IRS, tech support, or your bank, hang up. Now is not the time to worry about being rude! Visit the organization’s website and look for the “Contact Us” area.
  • Never send money. Romance scams are real heartbreakers, and these scammers are master manipulators. Never send money to someone you haven’t met in person – face to face – no matter how sweet they seem and how many pictures they have sent.

If you do fall for a scam, don’t panic and don’t be embarrassed. You’re not alone. In fact, 1 in 3 American adults were scammed last year to the tune of $12 billion last year.
