Sheriff’s Corner: Looking for Love in all the Wrong Places

It seems like every week, I see new cases of romance scams. I get it, people want to feel loved, valued, and understood. That’s exactly what makes these scams so effective. Scammers don’t just go after wallets; they target loneliness and the desire for connection. As these scams become more sophisticated, it’s important to understand how they work and how to protect ourselves.

Some red flags include profiles that seem too perfect or too good to be true. Is that photo too perfect, professional-looking, or model-like? Open Google, search Reverse Image, and drop a copy of that picture into the search and see what you find. If the other person wants to quickly move the conversation to private messaging apps or keep the relationship secret, it’s probably a red flag. If someone always has an excuse for not meeting in person or on a video chat but still asks for money for an emergency or travel, consider this a major red flag. Do they have very few online friends? Do they have a questionable profession, like serving in the military on a secret base or working on a far-off oil rig, and can’t see you? Red flag.

Being aware and cautious is key. Trust your instincts, and if you are unsure about a new online contact, talk to a trusted friend or family member. If this person sounds too good to be true, they probably are. Don’t send questionable photos to a stranger on the internet. If you don’t want the photo shown to your friends and family, don’t send it, and never send gift cards, Bitcoin, or any sort of money to anyone for any reason.

If you or someone you know becomes the victim of a scam, don’t be embarrassed. File a police report. And if the victim of a scam receives services from Summit DD, file the MUI, and I’ll handle the report. Have an honest conversation about these online scams, and let’s protect each other.
