FAQs and Resources for Updated DODD First Aid and CPR Guidance

DODD updated their guidance regarding CPR and First Aid Certification on May 11. You might be wondering what that means for you or your staff. Below is a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) to help you navigate the important information you need to keep people safe and maintain certifications with DODD.

If I already have my CPR/FA certificate, do I need to get an online certificate too?

No. Your certificate is good until it expires. DODD’s guidance only pertains to NEW STAFF or staff who DO NOT have their CPR/FA certification yet.

Does it matter where I get the online CPR/FA certificate?

As long as the online CPR/FA provider is American Red Cross or American heart Association comparable (per DODD requirements), and you can take the in-person skills class when needed. How much will it cost?

Costs vary from $14.95 to $44.95, depending on the vendor.

How long are the certificates valid?

Most certificates are good for two (2) years upon successful completion of all online modules and passing of the online tests, payment for certificate. Be sure to check with the online provider to confirm this prior to registration. Red Cross certs are good for two years.

Do I absolutely have to get an online CPR/FA certificate to work as a DSP?

No. However, please note DODD has stipulated,

“DSPs without current CPR/first aid may provide direct supports as long as they are working with a nurse or at least one other staff person who has current CPR/first aid certification.”

Also, please note DODD has stipulated,

“CPR/first aid certification as required by rule must be obtained if the staff person maintains a direct support position after June 1, 2020.”

Do online courses have skills assessments?

There are no skills assessments administered as a portion of any fully online BLS (basic life support) course. While the same material is covered in your studies, your grasp of that knowledge will be tested cognitively rather than in a hands-on manner.

Please note that some providers require in-person assessments in addition to the online portion of their courses.

Can I get an American Heart Association Provider Card?

No. Currently, the AHA does not accredit, approve, nor endorse any fully online BLS or CPR certification or renewal course. The AHA requires an in-person, hands-on- skills assessment as a part of their certification program, and that is not possible online.

What happens if my employer turns down my card?

You should check with your employer to see if they will accept online courses for BLS, CPR or First Aid certifications or recertifications prior to registering with any website. While some websites do offer a money back guarantee should this occur, not all will. If they do not, you have little or no recourse to recoup your money.

Is my online BLS course or exam timed?

In most cases, your online BLS course will not be timed. You will be provided the opportunity to work at your own pace and schedule. This is the biggest benefit to online certification and recertification.

What happens if I fail the online exam?

In the event that you do not pass your online BLS exam on the first attempt, most websites will allow you to try again at no additional cost. Please be aware that not all websites will provide unlimited re-tests with no waiting period. Be sure to check the specific website you choose for their policy on re-testing.

What happens after I pass my exam?

Once you pass your exam, be sure to check your results. You will then need to request any CME credits earned, your BLS certification and a printable Provider Card (if you have chosen a site that offers them).

How long will it take for my physical Provider Card to arrive?

The time it takes to receive your physical Provider card varies from site to site. However, in most cases you can expect to have it within 2-5 business days of the time that you requested it. In some cases, you may be offered a digital Provider Card as well which is available to download and print out immediately.

How long is my certification valid? When will it expire?

All BLS healthcare provider cards are valid for a period of two years – regardless of where you received your provider card or renewal.

Will I receive study material with an online course?

The study materials that you receive for your BLS course will vary depending on the provider that you choose. Some will may hard copies of their materials while others may offer access to downloadable materials via a locked website. The most common delivery system is providing downloadable PDF versions of everything. Regardless of format, they should adhere to AHA guidelines. Whichever you choose is a matter of personal preference.

How can an unaccredited organization be legit or acceptable?

Even though the AHA will not accredit any BLS class that is offered wholly online, that in no way means that online courses are not legitimate or accredited. Prior to registration, inquire as to whether your BLS provider has agreements with any other accrediting agencies. In most cases, your online BLS Provider card will be accepted by most hospitals and institutions. Keep in mind that the AHA does not accredit or endorse any other providers – they are their own provider. There are many nationally accredited BLS, CPR and First Aid coursers that are acceptable alternatives to the AHA and based on their guidelines.

Are the online courses CME Credit(s) eligible?

CME credits are available upon completion of your BLS certification and renewal courses in many cases. However, not all online providers offer them. If this is important, you must verify the provider offers CME credits for successful completion prior to registering for the course.

ONLINE CPR/FA/AED PROVIDERS

Prior to registering with an online provider for your Basic Life Support (CPR) certification or re-certification courses, you should ensure that the course meets all your needs aside from being time and cost efficient. While pursuing your BLS certification or renewal online is easier than having to attend classes in person, you will still want to make several key inquiries before registering with any provider.
