Holiday Celebrations are for Everyone.
Tips to help make it simply special for those on altered diets….and those cooking too!!
- Ask what foods make specific celebrations special and memorable. Try to incorporate them in the meal
- Make sure all the necessary equipment is working in advance.
- If appropriate, talk about the celebration beforehand so folks understand what to expect.
- Include individuals in as much of the preparation as appropriate: decorating, food prep, clean up, etc.
- If visiting friends or family; call ahead to find out what’s on the menu and plan accordingly
- Offer to bring texture friendly dishes
- Bring necessary equipment to prep food/drinks and specialized utensils, dishes, cups, etc.
Prepare foods/drinks to the appropriate texture prior to presenting the plate at the table. This allows the person preparing the food to sit and enjoy their meal with the group…. while the food it hot.
Sit together as in family style dining to provide support naturally while engaging in the social aspect of the occasion.
Set up the environment to maximize independence and enjoyment while maintaining safety.
